Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) are structures established by higher education institutions to collaborate with the public and private sectors on research, development, and innovation; to protect the knowledge generated and inventions made under intellectual property rights; and to transfer them into practice.
TTOs host important organisations that promote the establishment of academically-based companies within universities (spin-offs) and secure project funding for start-up companies, with the aim of ensuring that academic research is conducted on a sound basis; legally protecting and registering knowledge and converting it into economic value; establishing links between the university's research centres and the private sector, and between researchers and entrepreneurs, investors and industrialists; ensuring innovation, R&D, patents and know-how are produced; protecting the intellectual property rights of the resulting value; and hosting important organisations that encourage the establishment of academically-based companies within the university (spin-offs) and the funding of start-up companies.
