Traditional Silk Worm Farming Revived at BAÜN

Balıkesir University (BAÜN), which continues its value-adding work in the field of agriculture and animal husbandry, continues to provide training and location support to entrepreneurs as part of its business development activities.

The ‘Silkworm Production’ project was launched in collaboration between Balıkesir University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and entrepreneur Nursal Haney to restart, develop and ensure sustainable production of silkworms, which are common in Balıkesir. The work, initiated at the breeding farm operating within the Animal Husbandry Application and Research Centre, is being carried out by Entrepreneur Nursal Haney and Veterinarian Melih Kerim Arslan from the Balıkesir University Technology Transfer Office. Teaching staff from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine are also participating in the work.

The project began in early May with the procurement and feeding of newly hatched larvae. After approximately 30 days, consisting of five life stages and four dormant stages, the silkworms reached the cocooning stage. Visit to the Production Facility by Rector Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu Balıkesir University Rector Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu, accompanied by Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Cevdet Avcıkurt, Prof. Dr. Fatih Satıl, and Secretary General Yemliha Yanar, visited the production facility. After receiving information about silkworm production efforts from entrepreneur Nursal Haney and veterinarian Melih Kerim Arslan, Rector Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu expressed his satisfaction at supporting efforts that could benefit the region and Balıkesir as a university.
